How is pngInLaw installed and updated

The Installation CD

When you subscribe to pngInLaw you will receive an installation CD. It will have the words "Installation CD" and a publication date, eg January 2002, on it. You need to use this CD to install pngInLaw onto your standalone computer hard drive or network server. Installation instructions will be sent to you with the Installation CD.

Note that pngInLaw does not run from the CD but from the hard drive. This ensures faster searching and retrieval of information. After installation, you should keep the Installation CD in a safe place, in case you need it at a later date to reinstall pngInLaw. (Update CDs do not contain the Folio Views software; if you install pngInLaw using one of them without first having installed pngInLaw from an Installation CD, pngInLaw will not work.)

Update CDs

pngInLaw Update CDs are sent out quarterly (January, April, July, October). There may be a delay of several weeks, as there are often delays in receiving materials from PNG. Once pngInLaw has been installed on your computer (having used an Installation CD) all you need to do is run the Update CD and install the latest update. (Updating instructions accompany each Update CD.) You must install the update in the same folder (on your hard drive or networked drive) where pngInLaw was first installed. The Update CD will overwrite all the data files (*.NFOs)

Making sure that the updates have been installed

The best way to do this is: (i) before updating pngInLaw open the MenuBase or the current legislation infobase, note the date at the top of the database and close it; (ii) install the Update CD; (iii) open the database again, and check if the date has now changed. (With stand alone computers there should not be a problem; however with networks it is quite easy to install the new legislation file in a wrong place, ie on the hard drive of the client computer instead of on the networked drive.)

The publication date and the name of the update (eg April update) are in big letters at the top of most of the databases.

The Internet Retriever

The Internet Retriever is an update in between Update CDs. The effect of running the Internet Retriever is to update a single pngInLaw file (database).

Originally the latest Internet Retriever file is on the Installation CD and an Update CD. It contains bills and uncommenced legislation. When we receive new cases, legislation or subsidiary legislation after the publication of the last Update CD, we update the Internet Retriever file and place it on our website to allow you to download and install it. In this way you get a relatively small file (which saves costs by reducing downloading time) delivered to you as quickly as possible.

Although some pngInLaw information can be read on the website using a Browser, the Internet Retriever process requires you to download a zipped file, unzip it, and then install it into the pngInLaw folder. The file will overwrite the Internet Retriever file with a more recent file.

We will send you an email notification when a new Internet Retriever file has been placed on the NiuMedia Pacific website for you to download and install.

When downloaded and installed, the Internet Retriever overwrites the Internet Retriever file on your computer. It is however a separate file. It does not overwrite the legislation database or any other files on your computer. Only the Update CDs will update your legislation database. Users should always check the Internet Retriever file for the latest legal information on PNG.

Instructions: If you wish to download and install the Internet Retriever, follow the instructions on the Internet: download the file on your computer, remember where you downloaded it, double click the file and press the Install button. It will install itself in your pngInLaw folder on you hard drive by default. If pngInLaw is installed on a network drive, you will need to change the target location during the installation process. (Print out the webpage with the instructions on it for downloading and installing the Internet Retriever).

You can access the Internet Retriever in three main ways: Firstly through the Start Button (Start Button-programs-pngInLaw-Internet Retriever); (2) Once you have opened up any pngInLaw infobase, click the Open button on the toolbar, choose the pg_i_ret.nfo file and click OK; and (iii) Open the MenuBase and double click on the words "Double-click to go to Internet Retriever or open Pg_I_Ret.NFO".

Note that the Internet Retriever is a process that updates a file on your hard drive or network server. Although you need to download the Retriever file using the Internet, once you have done this, you do not need to be connected to the Internet to access and use the file.
